My Favorite Day: Woman knows where to run for a good time

Every perfect day, for me, includes being with family and friends, exercising, and having band practice. Bakersfield’s gotten so big, a “perfect day” needs to be divided by area, I think. If it’s not time for the fair, The Pie Run, or Christmas Lights at CALM, these are some perfect days:

Music at Narducci’s or silent movie at The Granada Theatre.

SOUTHSIDE

Head out 58 for breakfast at Milt’s or out Union for Thai sandwich and tea at Little Saigon Plaza; explore Casa Loma and other old neighborhoods and murals on Union Avenue liquor store; continue South for country drive; lunch at Root Beer King in Lamont; more murals along Arvin’s main street; head south, get on the Grapevine, and take an Old Ridge Route tour, or go west and drive along Taft Highway to explore Pumpkin Center’s old bars and buildings. Return to town to the Wilson library, HomeMart, and Floyd’s. Chow down at Ranch Market or BBQ Express, then see a late-night movie at BAMS (at BCT).

NORTHSIDE

Jog out to El Taquito for breakfast burritos; shop at Big Lots, Goodwill, and Boot Barn; visit the Rathbun Library, have dinner at Highland Cafe; live music at Ethel’s Old Corral and Trout’s; late-night meal at Zingo’s.

WESTSIDE

Jog out Kern River Parkway to Trader Joe’s or to St. Philip Church to walk the labyrinth; get peanut butter bagel from Bagels and Blenderz or Meal in a Cup at Beyond Juice. Take dogs to Kroll Way dog park. Places to eat: Tony’s Pizza, Singha Thai, Taj Mahal, Izumo, Mimi’s Cafe, Fabious’ Corner BBQ, Prime Cut, Elephant Bar. Buy treats at Lassen’s, India Sweets and Spices, Asia Market. Go to the movies at one of the “big box” theaters. For a Sunday drive, head out to Tita’s Pupuseria in Buttonwillow, then continue exploring the ever-expanding western edge of town, north to south.
