“He was here before session started,” said his spokeswoman, Jennifer Hanson. “He led the flag salute and he’s taking up three bills.”

Florez, D-Shafter, made a speech to the California delegation — of which he is officially a part — but was out of Denver before the convention began, Hanson said.

“I wish deeply in my heart I could stay and personally witness the most historic convention in my lifetime,” Florez told The Sacramento Bee. “I’m very disappointed.”

Assemblywoman Nicole Parra, D-Hanford, was also scheduled to head for Denver, but canceled her trip, according to her chief of staff, Derek Chernow.

“Nicole will not be attending the Democratic convention,” Chernow said. “She had made a commitment not to go unless a water bond came up for a vote, and so far it has not.”

Both Florez and Parra were delegates for Barack Obama, who is scheduled to accept the Democratic nomination Thursday.

After the convention, Kern County’s delegates will be the guest speakers when the Democratic Women of Kern meet.

The meeting will be 8:30 a.m. Sept. 13. at the Camino Real Restaurant (the old Cask & Cleaver), 3500 Truxtun Ave.
